Motivation is derivative from the word 'motive', which signifies a person's needs, wishes, wants, or cravings. Basically, it is the process of motivating individuals to take action in order to achieve a goal. The psychological fundamentals fueling people's behavior in the context of job goals might include a desire for money. (Ganta, V.C., 2014)
The key to motivating employees is understanding that people are motivated to do something by the belief that it is in their best interest. As a result, you cannot motivate someone else. You can only influence them once they become motivated. (Bruce, A. (2006)
Further Successful companies create an environment where employees will feel high-pitched about themselves as a result, they like to perform at a higher level (Tracy, 2014). Manager’s responsibility is to get the best from each individual member of the team or department therefore, the organization has to carry out different motivational activities. It requires building a good work environment based on the relationship between employees and management (Manmohan, 2013).

Agreed. Further, the motivation is a method of encouraging and energizing employees to work without any force but also with their own passion, pleasure, confidence and jointly to accomplish given targets (Mullins, 2005).
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Sarasi, the term “will” was used by
Deletewell-known philosophers as well as notable social theorists when talking about motivating human behaviors. According to them, motivation is believed to be; an entity that compelled one to action. Recently, many researchers have offered unique definitions of motivation. (Forgas, Williams and Laham 2005, 86)
Hi Manomi, every successful firm is supported by a loyal workforce, and loyalty is the result of employee motivation and job satisfaction. Employees are motivated toward company goals via energy. Without commitment, the company would not be able to produce performance. Organizations must have competitive personnel policies and practices in order to get a competitive advantage. An essential stimulus that controls human behavior is motivation. Because no two people have the same attitude or conduct, organizations must develop policies that will please the group as a whole rather than simply an individual. (Varma, 2018).
ReplyDeleteThank you for your input, The relationship between employee motivation and job performance has been studied in the past. But the high statistical relationship between the two was not instituted. Notwithstanding, later on, research resolved that employee motivation and job performance are indeed mutually related. This correlation is studied in this thesis and the objective is to render useful information to managers on how employees’ performance can be increased by intrinsically or extrinsically motivating them. (Vroom, 1964)
DeleteManomi, (Irum Shahzadi, 2014) defines the same Employee motivation is viewed as the force that drives employees to achieve specific goals and objectives of an organization. Further mentioned that motivation is basically to encourage behavioral change.
ReplyDeleteAgreed Manomi. As a addition, a psychosomatic process motivates a person, causing them to act and behave in ways that meet certain unmet needs (Latham, 2011). Employee motivation facilitates the performance of duties by offering guidance and stimulation (Lauby, 2005). There are two types of employee motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic and the relationship between intrinsic drive and people's innately pleasant behavior (Legault, 2016). Extrinsically motivated workers put in a lot of effort because they want to be acknowledged and rewarded for achieving the desired outcomes (Ryan and Deci , 2000), and extrinsic motivation is defined as motivation that comes from outside sources in return for advantages not directly related to the activity at hand (Owoyele, 2017).
ReplyDeleteThanks for your input. Motivation can be specified as a management process, which encourage people to work better for the overall benefit of the organization, by providing them motives, which are based on their unfulfilled needs. The matters arising is: “why managers need to motivate employees?” (Herzberg, 1959).
DeleteMotivation is an encouragement and strength given to an individual to come out with his innovative ideas with confidence. Motivation always helps an employee to think out of the box. And it is a always an invisible force given to employees to perform in their best
ReplyDeleteAgreed and thank you for the input Uday. Motivation and productivity are concepts that have been subjects of immense interest among researchers and practitioners. Both concepts have been defined in a variety of ways by several scholars. If we have to review the definitions, the paper will be unnecessarily long and boring. Therefore, we have adopted the approach of describing what we mean by these two terms and proceeding to discuss the issues with the understanding that the descriptions will serve the purpose of definitions. (M. A. Bawa, 2017)
DeleteThank you Ishara for your input. I agree with the point that the psychological process gives behavior purpose and direction for motivation (Kreitner, 1995);
ReplyDeleteAgreed Manomi, Various definitions of motivation have been proposed in academia, spanning from management to psychology to associated sciences. Motivation, according to Kreitner and Kinicki (1998) and Ramlall (2004), is derived from the Latin word "movere," which means "to move." Butkus and Green (1999) also said that motivation is derived from the word "motivate," which also implies moving, pushing, or persuading to act in order to meet a need.
ReplyDeleteGreat article Manomi, Motivation is defined as the performance of an activity because it is perceived to be instrumental in achieving valued outcomes (Teo, Lim, & Lai, 1999). and also according to Rakes & Dunn (2010) motivation is generally viewed as a process through which an individual’s needs and desires are set in motion
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Chathuri. Also, motivation as a general term that drives desires, needs and wishes. (Kootz, 2005) sees motivation as the general set of forces that cause someone to act or react in certain ways. (Analoui, 2000)
DeleteInteresting content Manomi. It is also interesting to note that Siddiqui (2014) gave a rather straignthforward definition to employee motivation by calling it a person’s intrinsic willingness to archive any particular goal or task and added that individuals with higher levels of motivation tend to have a higher desire and drive to achieve goals.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Nelushan. Further, The word ‘motivation’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Movere’ which means ‘to move (Luthans, 2002). According to the Oxford Advance Learner Dictionary (2006), motivation is the element that propels a person to do something or behaves in a particular way.
DeleteAgreed to your point and thanks for commenting. Furthermore, Analoui, (2000) sees motivation as the general set of forces that cause someone to act or react in certain ways.
